Improve your chances with IVF

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) and other assisted reproductive technologies can help people have a baby, including couples experiencing fertility challenges, same-sex couples, and single women choosing to become parents.

Your comprehensive fertility testing with Dr Matthew Holland will help guide his recommendations for treatment, along with your personal preferences and priorities. In some cases, improving your lifestyle or general health may be enough to support natural conception. For others, assisted reproductive treatments may be recommended.

What is IVF?

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) has been helping Australians have babies since 1979. In fact, one in 16 babies born in Australia every year are conceived through IVF as the technology continues to be refined and become more well-known and accessible.

How IVF works

IVF is a process when an egg is fertilised with sperm outside the body to help achieve pregnancy. It begins with ovulation stimulation where Dr Holland prescribes a hormone medication to the female partner providing the eggs. This stimulates her ovaries to produce multiple eggs in the cycle instead of the usual single egg. Once mature, the eggs are retrieved from the woman’s ovaries via a short day procedure, and combined in a laboratory culture dish with sperm for fertilisation. This sperm is provided by the male partner or by a sperm donor.

The fertilised eggs are then incubated for five days in Genea’s cutting edge incubation technology Geri, a revolutionary system designed to create an optimal environment for embryo development. After this, a single embryo is selected for transfer to your uterus. You have the option of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) on these embryos prior to transfer to increase your chances of selecting a healthy, genetically normal embryo for pregnancy.

IVF success rates with Dr Matthew Holland and Genea Newcastle

Dr Holland is proudly partnered with Genea Newcastle, which has consistently demonstrated IVF success rates well above the national average for all measures.

As world-leading pioneers in the fertility field, Genea’s research and technologies have doubled IVF success rates for patients since the mid-90s, and their constant search for breakthrough innovations continues to improve outcomes today.

Some of their advancements include:

  • Routine day 5 embryo transfers, allowing better identification of which embryos have the highest development potential and likelihood of success
  • Gold standard single embryo transfer, improving outcomes for both baby and mother
  • The Geri time-lapse incubator, a highly refined piece of technology enabling precise environmental control for your growing embryos
  • Gems culture media, a next-generation formulation for nourishing developing embryos with critical nutrients
  • Gavi, the world’s first automated vitrification instrument for safe freezing of embryos to use with future cycles or for embryo donation

Other assisted reproductive technologies

While IVF is often the most widely recognised fertility treatment, it is only one of a range of assisted reproductive technologies that may be considered. Based on your fertility factors and personal preferences, Dr Holland may suggest an alternative, including IUI or ICSI, or considering donor conception.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

IUI involves inserting the sperm provided by your male partner (or donor) directly into your uterus during a short day procedure. The insemination step can either be synchronised with your natural ovulation cycle or Dr Holland can manage the timing of your cycle with hormone medications. The sperm is released into your uterus with a long thin tube (catheter), passed through your cervix.

IUI is considered to be a less invasive and less costly fertility treatment compared to IVF. However, IUI has a much lower success rate than IVF or ICSI.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Dr Holland may recommend ICSI if you and your partner are affected by severe sperm abnormalities. ICSI is also necessary for couples conceiving with frozen eggs.

ICSI involves injecting a single sperm directly into an egg, rather than requiring the sperm to penetrate and fertilise the egg in a laboratory dish. ICSI follows the same steps of the IVF procedure, from ovulation stimulation to egg retrieval.

Donor conception

Through Dr Holland’s affiliation with Genea Fertility, you have access to Genea’s egg and sperm donor program and their extensive local and international donor database.

Donor conception may be considered if you are a same-sex couple, looking to become a solo parent, have an increased risk of passing on a genetic disorder, or a heterosexual couple affected by infertility. There are several logistic, emotional, and legal factors that come with using a donor. Dr Holland and the Genea donor team will be by your side to guide you through the whole process.

FAQs

How do I choose between IVF, IUI, and ICSI?

If you agree that assisted reproduction is the best way forward, Dr Holland will guide you on this decision. In certain situations, there will be a clearly better option (such as ICSI for severe male factor infertility).

While not the only consideration when choosing a fertility specialist, the cost of IVF is an important factor for many people. The transparent costs of IVF and other services with Genea Newcastle can be found here.

Good preconception health can go a long way in maximising your chances of IVF success. This includes maintaining a healthy body weight, eating well, and avoiding tobacco and recreational drugs. Choosing the right fertility clinic for your IVF treatment can also make a difference – Dr Holland is partnered with Genea Newcastle, which has consistently delivered superior IVF success rates compared to the national average.
